مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth لَمdid not يَحفُرdig بِهِin it أَحَدٌanyone قَبراa grave
When my day comes, let me be laid to rest in a place
When my day comes, let me be laid to rest in a place
on earth where no one has ever dug a grave.
on earth where no one has dug a grave.
هُمُthey الناسُthe people إِنif جازاهُمُrecompenses them اللَهُGod بِالَّذيfor what
تَوَخَّوهُthey sought it لَمdid not يَرحَمshow mercy to جَهولاًan ignorant person وَلاnor حَبراa scholar
Such are mankind: if God requites them for what
Such are people: if God repays them for what
they deliberately sought, He would spare neither ignorant nor learned.
they have sought, He will spare neither the ignorant nor the learned.
يَرىhe sees عَنَتاًhardship فيin قُربِnearness to حَيٍّa living person وَمَيِّتٍand a dead person
مِنَof الإِنسِhumankind مَنwhoever جَلّىuncovered سَرائِرَهُمtheir secrets خُبراthrough experience
He finds anguish in the company of the living and the dead—
There is hardship in being near the living and the dead
whoever, knowing humankind, has laid their secrets bare.
of humankind, for whoever has uncovered their secrets through experience.
فَياso, oh لَيتَنيif only I لاnot أَشهَدُI witness الحَشرَthe Gathering فيهِمُamong them
إِذاwhen بُعِثواthey are resurrected شُعثاًdisheveled رُؤوسُهُمُtheir heads غُبراdust-covered
Would that I did not witness the Gathering among them
So, would that I might not witness the Gathering among them,
when they are raised disheveled, their heads dust-covered.
when they are raised, disheveled, their heads dust-covered.
إِذاwhen تَمَّis complete فيin ماwhat تُؤنَسُis comforted العَينُthe eye مَضجَعيmy resting place

When my resting place is finished in a spot that comforts the eye,
When my resting place is complete to the eye's satisfaction,
then—may God guide you—add one span more to its breadth.
give me—may God guide you—a handspan more of room.
وَإِنand if سَأَلواthey ask عَنabout مَذهَبيmy creed فَهُوَthen it is خَشيَةٌfear
مِنَof اللَهِGod لاnot طَوقاًfree will أَبُثُّI proclaim وَلاnor جَبراcompulsion
And if they ask about my creed, it is reverent fear
And if they ask about my creed, it is fear
of God: I preach neither human power nor compulsion.
of God; I proclaim neither free will nor compulsion.
