مِنَ المالِ فَقراً وَالسُرورُ بِهِ حُزنا
When a young man applies his mind, he counts wealth
In money as poverty, and joy in it as sorrow.

He is a steward for humankind when he gives freely,
And for his heirs if he intends to hoard it.

And what decay has scattered becomes like a poem
Composed by ʿUbayd, who keeps no meter for it.
وَفيand on الأَرضِthe earth مَنthose who يَستَمطِرُseek rain from السَيفُthe sword رِزقُهُhis sustenance

And on earth are those who ask the sword to rain down their sustenance,
While some among the people seek rain from the clouds.

Through it we have known time's good and evil;
Yes, and upon it we have trodden smooth ground and rough.

وَيَطمَعُ في وِردِ السَرابِ مَعاشِرٌ
وَسَوفَand will يَروزونَthey gauge الخُطوبَcalamities كَماjust as رُزناwe have gauged
وَسَوفَ يَروزونَ الخُطوبَ كَما رُزنا
And groups of people hope to drink from a mirage,
And they will yet take the measure of calamities, as we have.
