Welcome, death's calamity and her return,

That she may cover me with the ample folds of her robes.

Your world is a house: if those present there

Are wise, they will not weep for those absent from it.

She has shown calamities exceeding the pebbles

In number—and how many lie in her bosom and her chests!

She rends them with her swords and casts them down

With her spears, and strikes them with her arrows.

Those who win her glory and her wealth

Are little different in lot from those she disappoints.

A venom-gathering serpent's fangs are the mouth of her

Who drove me to excess; I fancied wine in her fangs.

    فَالعَجزُ وَالتَفريطُ في هُيّابِها

    Indeed, death has never feared one held in awe;

So weakness and negligence lie in those who fear her.

And one marvel is that everyone longs

For Umm Dafr—Mother of Stench—though he is among her detractors.

So spit out eloquence on the dust's behalf, for she

Rules for her death-crier against her Ziryab.
