Umama, how can I find a true guide?

And my illness chokes me; so when shall I return?

So fear my fierceness, and give up hope in me,

For I, like the assailant of men, am an assailant.

From Kanud, ingratitude has come to us,

And good fortune from Su'ad has eluded the people.

Have you no minds, children of this world,

To restrain you from rivalry and mutual hostility?

Is it our lot to end in bare earth?

Then why the spearheads and spear shafts?

And whoever among you has closeness for his lot—

Indeed, my greatest fortune lies in keeping far away.

And I have tested you, and so found ignorance

Plain among the straight-haired and the curly-haired.

    فَبُؤسٌ لِلأَصادِقِ وَالأَعادي

    Harm comes from friend or foe;

So woe to friends and enemies!

And these days will leave of me

As much as they left of Iram and 'Ad.
