كَالغَيثِlike rain يَبكيweeps وَفيهِand within it بارِقٌa lightning flash بَسَماsmiled
Two neighbors: one complaining, the other happy with his lot,
Neighbors complaining and delighted with their state
like rain that weeps while a lightning flash within it smiles.
Like rain that weeps yet flashes with lightning
مالُwealth الدَفينِof the buried man أَتىreached الُورّاثَthe heirs فَاِقتَسَمواso they divided it
وَلَمand did not يُراعوهُthey heed him فيconcerning ثُلثٍa third لَهُfor himself قَسَماhe allotted
The buried man's wealth reached his heirs, and they divided it,
The ship owner's wealth came to the heirs and they divided it
and did not heed him concerning the third he had allotted for himself.
And did not allocate a third share for him as allotted
لاnot أَطعَمواthey fed مِنهُfrom it مِسكيناًa poor person وَلاnor بَذَلواthey bestowed

They fed no poor person from it, nor bestowed
They did not feed a poor person from it, nor gave charity
charity, nor atoned for an oath he had broken.
Nor expiated any oaths in his shares
أَوصىhe made a will فَلَمbut did not يَقبَلواthey accept مِنهُfrom him وَعاهَدَهُمand he made a pact with them
فَقابَلواso they met بِخِلافٍwith defiance كُلَّall ماthat which رَسَماhe prescribed
He made a will, but they would not accept it from him; he made a pact with them,
He bequeathed but they did not accept from him, and he made covenants with them
yet they met all he had prescribed with defiance.
Yet they opposed everything he outlined
وَالعَيشُand life داءٌa disease وَمَوتُand the death المَرءِof a person عافِيَةٌrecovery
إِنif داؤُهُhis disease بِتَواريby the disappearance of شَخصِهِhis bodily form حُسِماwas ended
And life is a disease, and a person's death is recovery,
And living is an illness, and a person's death is well-being
if his disease is ended by his body's disappearance.
For his illness is decided by his person passing away
أَنفاسُهُhis breaths كَخُطاهُlike his steps وَالبَقاءُand continued life لَهُfor him
مَسافَةٌa distance فَهوَso he يَفنىwastes away كُلَّماwhenever اِنتَسَماhe drew breath
His breaths are like his steps, and continued life for him is
His breaths are like his steps, and his survival
a distance; so he wastes away whenever he draws breath.
Is a distance, so he perishes each time he inhales
مَنازِلُdwellings الأَنفُسِof souls الأَجسادُthe bodies يُظعِنُهاmakes them depart
وَفدُthe delegation الحِمامِof death فَكَمso how many مِنof مَنزِلٍa dwelling طَسَماvanished
Bodies are the dwellings of souls, which are made to depart
The bodies are the abodes of souls, putrefying them
by death's delegation—how many a dwelling has vanished!
And multitudes of doves, so how many an abode did they ruin
