تَوَلّيturn away ياO خَبيثَةُwicked one لاnot هَلُمّيcome hither
أَقولُI say إِذاwhen نَأَيتِyou drew away وَلاand not تَعاليcome here
“Turn away, wicked one,” not “come hither,”
Turn away, you traitor, do not come near
I say when you draw away—not “come here.”
I say when you go far and do not draw close
وَإِمّاand if كُنتِyou were ياO نُوَبيmy calamities وَلاءًin succession
فَإِنّيthen indeed I لاnot أُحاذِرُI fear أَنthat تُواليyou follow in succession
And if you come in succession, O my calamities,
Even if you were loyal, my companion
then I do not fear your following one another.
I do not fear that you will change sides
تَعالىrose high القَومُthe people فيin طَلَبِpursuit of المَعاليlofty honors

فَياso, O قَمَراًa moon بِذيin a place with كَلَإٍherbage تَعالىcome hither
The people rose high in pursuit of lofty honors;
The people aspire to rise to great heights
so, O moon in a grassy place, come hither!
So like the moon over rocky terrain, draw near
وَلَوand if أوتيتُI was granted فيconcerning الأَيّامِthe days لُبّاًunderstanding
تَقارَضَتِyou exchanged الوِدادَaffection وَلَمand did not تُقاليyou hate in return
And had I been granted insight into the days,
And if I were granted in days past a beloved friend
you would have exchanged affection and not returned hatred.
You bargained affection and did not refuse
