لَناto us belong خَفضُlow station المَحَلَّةِof rank وَالدَناياand base things
لَنا خَفضُ المَحَلَّةِ وَالدَنايا
وَلِلَّهِand to God belong المَكارِمُnoble deeds وَالعُلُوّand exaltation
وَلِلَّهِ المَكارِمُ وَالعُلُوّ
To us belong low station and base things;
to God belong noble deeds and exaltation.
إِذاif كانَis الهَوىpassion فيin النَفسِthe soul طَبعاًan ingrained trait
إِذا كانَ الهَوى في النَفسِ طَبعاً
فَلَيسَthen there is no بِغَيرِexcept through ميتَتِهاits death سُلُوّrelease from longing
فَلَيسَ بِغَيرِ ميتَتِها سُلُوّ
If passion is ingrained in the soul,
nothing but its death can bring release.
وَإِنand if أَهَلَتbecome inhabited دِيارٌdwellings مِنby أُناسٍpeople
وَإِن أَهَلَت دِيارٌ مِن أُناسٍ
فَسَوفَthen soon يَمَسُّهاit will touch them مِنهُمof them خُلُوُّemptiness
فَسَوفَ يَمَسُّها مِنهُم خُلُوُّ
And though dwellings become inhabited by people,
they will soon feel the emptiness left by them.
