مَرَّpassed الزَمانُtime فَأَضحىso became فيin الثَرىthe dust جَسَدٌa body
فَهَلso have...? تَمَلّىenjoyed رِجالٌmen بِالمُلاواتِwith long spans of time
Time passed, and a body came to lie in the dust.
Have men, then, enjoyed the long years?
وَالروحُand the soul أَرضِيَّةٌearthly فيin رَأيِthe view of طائِفَةٍa group
وَعِندَand according to قَومٍsome people تَرقّىit ascends فيthrough السَماواتِthe heavens
And the soul is earthly, in the view of one group,
while others hold that it ascends through the heavens.
تَمضيit journeys عَلىin هَيئَةِthe form of الشَخصِthe person الَّذيwhom سَكَنَتit dwelt

It journeys in the form of the person it dwelt
within, to an abode of bliss or misery.
وَكَونُهاand its being فيin طَريحِcast-off الجِسمِthe body أَحوَجَهاmade it need
إِلىto مَلابِسَgarments عَنَّتهاburdened it وَأَقواتِand provisions
And its dwelling in the cast-off body made it need
garments that burdened it, and food.
وَقُدرَةُand the power of اللَهِGod حَقٌّreal لَيسَnot يُعجِزُهاrenders it powerless
حَشرٌa gathering لِخَلقٍof creatures وَلاnor بَعثٌa resurrection لِأَمواتِof the dead
And God's power is real: beyond it lies neither
the gathering of creation nor the raising of the dead.
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِعُلوِيَّةِat the celestial الأَجرامِbodies صامِتَةًsilent

فيماin what يُقالُis said ومِنهاand among them ذاتُpossessing أَصواتِvoices
So marvel at the celestial bodies, silent,
so it is said—though some of them have voices.
وَلاand do not تُطيعَنَّever obey قَوماًa people ماnot دِيانَتَهُمtheir religion
إِلّاexcept اِحتِيالٌa scheme عَلىfor أَخذِtaking الإِتاواتِtribute payments
And never obey a people whose religion is nothing
but a scheme to exact tribute.

كَسبُearning الفَوائِدِprofits لاnot حُبُّlove of التِلاواتِrecitations
And what made its reader shoulder the Torah
was only the pursuit of gain, not love of recitation.

وَأَودَعَتناand implanted in us أَفانينَvarieties of العَداواتِenmity
Indeed, religious laws have sown grudges among us
and instilled in us all manner of enmity.
وَهَلand were...? أُبيحَتmade lawful نِساءُthe women of القَومِthe people عَنat عُرُضٍrandom
لِلعُربِto the Arabs إِلّاexcept بِأَحكامِby the rulings of النُبُوّاتِprophetic dispensations
And were the people's women made lawful indiscriminately
to the Arabs, except by the rulings of prophethood?
