أَوعَزَ الدَهرُ بِالفَناءِ إِلى النا

أَوعَزَ الدَهرُ بِالفَناءِ إِلى النا

سِ فَواهاً لِذَلِكَ الإيعازِ

سِ فَواهاً لِذَلِكَ الإيعازِ

Time has enjoined annihilation upon human-

Time decreed death for all the people

kind—alas for that injunction!

And they obeyed that command without delay

وَتَداعَوا في آلِ زَيدٍ وَعَمرٍ

وَتَداعَوا في آلِ زَيدٍ وَعَمرٍ

وَعَزاهُم لِتُربَةِ الأَرضِ عازِ

وَعَزاهُم لِتُربَةِ الأَرضِ عازِ

And they claimed kinship with the families of Zayd and Amr,

They perished, generations of Zayd's and Amr's

and someone traced them back to the earth’s dust.

And returned to become the soil of earth

أَعرِضوا عَن مَدائِحٍ وَتَهانٍ

أَعرِضوا عَن مَدائِحٍ وَتَهانٍ

فَالمَراثي أَولى بِكُم وَالتَعازي

فَالمَراثي أَولى بِكُم وَالتَعازي

Turn away from panegyrics and congratulations:

Turn away from praise or blame

for elegies and condolences befit you more.

For elegy and condolence better suit you now
