Time admonished you, but you did not understand its admonitions.

And it is as though, in its silence, it speaks.

If the sheep conversed with you, their wise one would say:

The wolf does wrong, but the son of Adam is more unjust.

Did you drive from us a horseman strong of foot,

Driven by his need and a dark night?

And what further excuses him in our eyes is that he

Is heedless, not knowing what you know.

You desire our safety and tend our grazing flock,

And a predator's belly is safer than your spears.

Your nails have risen to rival his claws

In might; those protected him, while these are trimmed.

Were it a verdant branch among growing plants,

Yadhbul and Yalamlam would be close to withering.

Be patient with your world: its time will pass,

For it is like a dream one dreams in sleep.

And often deliberation has fulfilled desires

From far away; and for every height there is a ladder.

And people differ: among them a wise man displays

Ignorance that disgraces, while an ignorant man feigns wisdom.

You parted, and your cares rose high; and time

Heals what is wounded through its long passage.

And when a hand is severed, its companion

Feels no pain, even if the hand is burned in fire.
