عاشواthey lived كَماas عاشَlived آباءٌfathers لَهُمof theirs سَلَفواhad gone before
وَأَورَثواand handed down الدِينَreligion تَقليداًby imitation كَماas وَجَدواthey found
They lived as their forefathers had lived,
And handed down religion by imitation, just as they had found it.
فَماso not يُراعونَthey heed ماwhat قالواthey said وَماand what سَمِعواthey heard
وَلاand not يُبالونَthey care مِنthrough غِيٍّerror لِمَنto whom سَجَدواthey prostrated themselves
So they heed neither what they have said nor what they have heard,
Nor, in their error, care to whom they have prostrated themselves.
وَالعُدمُand nonexistence أَروَحُmore restful مِمّاthan what فيهِin it عالَمُهُمtheir world
وَهُوَand it is التَكَلُّفُburdensome striving إِنif هَبّواthey awoke وَإِنand if هَجَدواthey slept
And nonexistence is more restful than their world's condition,
Which is burdensome striving, whether they wake or sleep.
لَمnot يَحمِprotect فارِسُa horseman حَيٍّa tribe مِنfrom رَداًdeath فَرَسٌa horse
وَلاand not أَجَدَّتhastened فَأَجَدَّتand thereby proved useful عِرمِسٌa sturdy she-camel أَجُدُstrong-backed
No horse has shielded a tribe's horseman from death,
Nor has a sturdy, strong-backed she-camel hastened to any avail.
وَالحَظُّand fortune يَسريtravels by night فَيُغشىand so envelops مَعشَراًa group حُسِبواwere deemed
مِنَamong اللِئامِthe base وَتُقضىand perish دونَهُshort of it المُجُدُthe noble
And fortune travels by night, enfolding a people deemed
Among the base, while the noble die without attaining it.
وَماand not تَوَقّىwarded off سُيوفَthe swords of الهِندِIndia بيضُwhite طُلىًthroats
بِأَنby having تُناطَbe hung إِلىto أَعناقِهاtheir necks النُجُدُsword-belts
And white throats have not escaped the swords of India
By having sword-belts hung about their necks.
قَدmay يَدأَبُtoil الرَجُلُthe man المَنجودُwearied by toil مُجتَهِداًstriving diligently
فيfor رِزقِthe livelihood of آخَرَanother لَمnot يُلمِمcome بِهِupon him النَجَدُthe sweat of toil
A man exhausted by toil may labor diligently
For the livelihood of another whom the sweat of toil has not touched.
