They have prepared for a dead man, whose hour had come,

a house of wood, neither lofty nor spacious.

You there, leave him with the earth, for he has

comfort in it, and it is the most fitting companion ever kept.

And the body is only dust; its best condition

is to be watered by clouds—so ask the clouds to rain on him.

The radiant one among men has become a line of windblown dust,

though he would take fright if ever his face grew pale.

Alike are one who feels no distress shortly after death

and one measuring clouds in young men's dwellings.

So fear laughter, and beware of making it your ally.

Do you not see the cloud, when made to laugh, burst into sobs?
