The tall, lean man does not endure through time,

nor does the bulky, stocky man.

O Abu al-Qasim, the vizier, you have departed,

and left me as the mat beneath my mill.

You left the precious books to the people,

Would that, before you drank death

in late afternoon, I had been made to drink it in my morning.

If Death has sought you out before me, I am

her target, and she is mine.

After your passing, Mother of Stench says to the taster:

"Do not crave me—for where is my seasoning?"

If your two recording angels write down a trifling sin,

how many a virtue will wipe it away!
