مِنsince عَهدِthe time of عادٍʿĀd وَأَذكىand kindled نارَهاits fire المَلِكُthe King
The sun may be extinguished—the sun that has blazed
since the days of ʿĀd, and whose fire the King kindled.
فَإِنso if خَبَتdies down فيin طَوالِthe long span of الدَهرِtime حُمرَتُهاits redness

So if its red glow dies down over the long ages,
then the celestial sphere must inevitably be dismantled.
مَضىhas departed الأَنامُhumankind فَلَولاso, were it not for عِلمُknowledge of حالِهِمُtheir state
لَقُلتُI would have said قَولَthe words of زُهَيرٍZuhayr أَيَّةًwhich path سَلَكواthey took
Humankind has departed; but for knowledge of their state,
I would have spoken Zuhayr’s words: “Which path did they take?”
فيin المُلكِthe dominion لَمdid not يَخرُجواthey go out عَنهُfrom it وَلاnor اِنتَقَلواthey moved

They are within the dominion; they have not left it, nor moved
from it—so how can I believe that they have perished?
