    فَلا تُخَيِّم عَلى الأَضغانِ وَالحَسَدِ

    The soul must depart from the body;

so do not camp amid grudges and envy.

And make the dark night a swift she-camel for your resolve,

its stars like scars left by leather saddle-straps and twisted rope.

So do you fear death from Simāk’s thrust,

or are you shielded by the crescent from the Lion’s claw?

Whoever does not travel by night and climb through his pitch-dark nights,

and bestow good on those seeking help, will not attain leadership.

The armored warrior’s bearing a helmet upon his head

is lighter on the head than resting it upon pillows.

And a blow struck against an adversary in battle, in triumph,

is more fitting for him than quarreling with corrupt neighbors.

And one enamored of shameful deeds, seeking a gift,

is intent on marketing his unsalable poems.
