يُشَجُّ بَنو آدَمٍ بِالصُخورِ
وَإِنَّand indeed المُدامَwine بِماءٍwith water تُشَجّis diluted (“gashed”)
وَإِنَّ المُدامَ بِماءٍ تُشَجّ
The sons of Adam have their heads gashed with stones,
Humans crave rocks to quench their thirst
And wine, indeed, is “gashed” with water.
Yet water is what truly refreshes
فَماso not نَزَلَhas descended اليُمنُgood fortune فيin شَربِهاdrinking it
فَما نَزَلَ اليُمنُ في شَربِها
وَلاnor فيin وِعاءِa vessel of سُلافٍchoice wine نَشَجgurgled
وَلا في وِعاءِ سُلافٍ نَشَج
So no good fortune has descended upon drinking it,
No bucket could hold the blessings it brings
Nor gurgled in a vessel of choice wine.
Nor any cup match its preciousness
