The prince grew angry at reproach; yet do you see

anyone who comes through with his honor unstained?

I am ignorant of all but one thing:

this world of mine is not fit for companionship.

So beware of them, whether black or white,

or brown, classed somewhere between those two.

And the sturdy she-camel, freed from your harm, is happier than

fair-faced maidens and beauties long unwed.

Indeed, sleep in the eye is praised; but hiring

nose-ringed camels brings grief to companionable beauties.

    فَمَتّى لِحاقي بِالجَواري الكُنَّسِ

    As for maidens in seclusion, they elude me;

so when shall I catch up with the coursing stars that hide?

And bodily form is not character: how often has the wild bull disdained

being hunted by a predator with a snub nose!
