The Pleiades are no cluster of white grapes,

nor is the night a ripe black grape.

    ريبِ فَلِيَتَّقِ المَليكَ اللَبيبُ

    And sunset's glow is far removed from wine;

so let the wise man fear the Sovereign.

The night grew long, as though the Scorpion had been killed

by an assailant, so that it ceased to creep.

Along the highland road, in death's caravan, went

    Qaṭarī, Najda, and Shabīb.

The discerning man's thought kindled a fire; no

love poetry ever befits a man of reason.

Where are Hippocrates and Galen, the imitator?

How vain the hope that a physician might live on!

Sustenance has been provided for humankind; no

incapacity can cut off that provision.

And death runs its course by decree; neither

    a lion nor a hand-reared gazelle escapes.

The hated visitor appears, while life

    is dear to these souls.

The bitterness of calamities sought to turn them against it,

but the incitement glanced off their hearts.
