رَبُّowner الجَوادِof the steed فَرىslaughtered عَيناًa wild bull لِمَأكَلِهِfor his meal
فَعُدso count مِنamong رَهطِa band of أَقوامٍpeople فَراعيناPharaohs
The owner of the steed slaughtered a wild bull for his meal;
So count him among a band of Pharaohs.
قُلsay لِلمَطاعيمِto lavish hosts تَعصيهِمdisobey them ضُيوفُهُمُtheir guests
إِنَّthat المَطاعينَhabitual stabbers يَمسونَbecome المُطاعيناthose obeyed
Tell the lavish hosts whose guests disobey them
That those who stab become those who are obeyed.
وَيُحمَدُand is praised المَرءُa person فيamong الساعينَthose who strive مُبتَكِراًsetting out early
وَلَيسَand is not يُحمَدُpraised يَوماًever فيamong المُساعيناfornicators
And a man is praised among the diligent when he sets out early,
But he is never praised among fornicators.
وَماand do not تَزالُcease تُلاقيyou meet فيin دُجىًdarkness وَضُحىًand morning light
مُبَشِّرينَbearers of glad tidings بِلاwithout بُشرىglad news وَناعيناand announcers of death
And you never cease to meet, in darkness and in morning light,
Bearers of glad tidings with no glad news, and announcers of death.
وَماand not وَجَدتُI found صُروفَvicissitudes الدَهرِof time ناكِبَةًturning aside
عَنaway from قانِتينَdevout worshippers لِوَجهِfor the sake of اللَهِGod داعيناpraying
And I have never found time's vicissitudes turning aside
From the devout who pray for God's sake.
شَرُّthe worst of النِساءِwomen مُشاعاتٌshared by all غَدَونَthey became سُدىًunrestrained
كَالأَرضِlike the earth يَحمِلنَthey bear أَولاداًchildren مُشاعيناshared by all
The worst of women are those shared by all, who have become unrestrained,
Like the earth, bearing children shared by all.
وَالأَمرُand the command لِلَّهِbelongs to God كَمhow many أَودىperished فَتىًa young man وَمَضىand passed away
عَيناًwithout a trace وَخَلَّفَand left behind أَطفالاًchildren مُضاعيناneglected
And all is God's to command: how many a young man has perished and gone
Without a trace, leaving neglected children behind.
وَالعَيشُand life أَوفاهُits fullest span يَمضيpasses مِثلَlike أَقصَرِهِits shortest span
سَبعٌseven كَسَبعينَlike seventy أَوor تُسعٌnine كَتِسعيناlike ninety
And life at its fullest passes like its shortest:
Seven years are like seventy, or nine like ninety.
وَلَوand if تُراعينَyou heed مَولىthe Lord of الناسِpeople كُلِّهُمُall of them
ماnot كُنتِyou would be مِنby نُوَبِthe calamities of الدُنياthe world تُراعيناyou are frightened
And if you heeded the Lord of all people,
You would not be frightened by the world's calamities.
