The loss of my eyes has spared my body at times
from wandering through the smooth, barren deserts.
وَإِنand though أُبيتَI spend the night سَميرَnight-companion الكُدرِsorrow فيin بَلَدٍa land

And though I spend the night as sorrow’s companion in a land
whose wastes are crossed by travelling at midday and before dawn,

أَنّيthat I أَعيشُlive بِتَمويهٍby deception وَتَدليسِand concealment
I love life; yet among its faults, this is enough for me:
that I live by deception and concealment.

We ask Time for noble men, while it offers us
two excuses: bankruptcy and making others bankrupt.

And I have learned, as have others, through observation,
that glory is the companion of men fearless in battle.

And Jiran’s day is my solace, in its ugliness
toward the virtuous, as are the days of al-Diyalis.
