أَجَلُّgreatest هِباتِgifts of الدَهرِTime تَركُthe withholding of المَواهِبِgifts
يَمُدُّit stretches out لِماtoward what أَعطاكَit gave you راحَةَthe palm of ناهِبِa plunderer
The greatest of Time's gifts is the withholding of gifts;
it stretches a plunderer's palm toward what it gave you.
وَأَفضَلُand better مِنthan عَيشِa life of الغِنىwealth عَيشُa life of فاقَةٍpoverty
وَمِنand than زِيِّthe attire of مَلكٍa king رائِقٍsplendid زِيُّthe garb of راهِبِa monk
And a life of poverty is better than a life of wealth,
and a monk's garb than a king's splendid attire.
وَماand not خِلتُهُI thought it إِلّاexcept سَيُبعَثُwill send forth حادِثاًa calamity

And I have thought it sure to send forth a calamity
that dislodges the Pleiades from the brow of darkness.
جَلاit unveiled فَرقَدَيهِits two Calf-stars قَبلَbefore نوحٍNoah وَآدَمٍand Adam

It unveiled its two Calf-stars before Noah and Adam;
to this day they have yet to be numbered among aged bulls.
وَليand I have مَذهَبٌa creed فيin هَجرِيَmy shunning of الإِنسِhumankind نافِعٌbeneficial
إِذاwhen القَومُthe people خاضواthey plunge فيinto اِختِيارِchoosing المَذاهِبِcreeds
And in shunning humankind I have a creed that serves me well,
when people plunge into choosing creeds.
أَراناI see us عَلىupon الساعاتِthe hours فُرسانَhorsemen on غارَةٍa raid
وَهُنَّwhile they بِناwith us يَجرينَthey race جَريَthe running of السَلاهِبِlong-limbed steeds
I see us mounted on the hours, horsemen on a raid,
while they bear us at the gallop of long-limbed steeds.
وَمِمّاand among what يَزيدُincreases العَيشَlife إِخلاقَthe wearing-out of مَلبَسٍa garment
تَأَسُّفُthe regret of نَفسٍa soul لَمnot تُطِقshe could رَدَّbring back ذاهِبِwhat has gone
And among the things that wear life's garment thinner
is the regret of a soul unable to bring back what has gone.
