قالَsaid المُنَجِّمُthe astrologer وَالطَبيبُand the physician كِلاهُماboth of them
لاnot تُحشَرُare resurrected الأَجسادُthe bodies قُلتُI said إِلَيكُماaway, both of you!
The astrologer and the physician both said:
The astrologer and the doctor both said,
“Bodies will not be resurrected.” I said, “Away with you both!”
"Bodies will not be resurrected." I said to them,
إِنif صَحَّis true قَولُكُماwhat you both say فَلَستُthen I am not بِخاسِرٍat a loss
أَوor صَحَّis true قَوليwhat I say فَالخُسارُthen the loss عَلَيكُماupon you both
If what you both say is true, I am not at a loss;
"If what you say is true, I have lost nothing;
or if what I say is true, the loss falls on you both.
Or if what I say is true, the loss is upon you both."
طَهَّرتُI purified ثَوبيmy garment لِلصَلاةِfor prayer وَقَبلَهُand before it
طُهرٌpurification فَأَينَthen where الطُهرُpurity مِنin جَسَدَيكُماyour two bodies
I purified my garment for prayer, and before that
I purified my garment for prayer and faced it;
came purification; where, then, is purity in your two bodies?
It is pure. So where is the purity in both your bodies?
وَذَكَرتُand I remembered رَبّيmy Lord فيin الضَمائِرِinmost thoughts مُؤنِساًcomforting
خَلَديmy heart بِذاكَwith that فَأَوحِشاso make desolate, both of you خَلَدَيكُماyour two hearts
And I remembered my Lord in my inmost thoughts, comforting
And I remembered my Lord in consciences as a companion;
my heart thereby; so leave your two hearts desolate.
With that he made my eternity pleasant, while he made both your eternities desolate.
وَبَكرتُand I set out early فيin البَردَينِthe two cool times أَبغيI seek رَحمَةًmercy
مِنهُfrom Him وَلاand not تُرَعانِyou two are alarmed فيin بُردَيكُماyour two cloaks
And I set out early in the two cool hours, seeking mercy
And I woke up early in the two cold seasons seeking mercy from Him,
from Him, while you two remain untroubled in your cloaks.
While you two are not protecting yourselves from the cold in your two garments.
إِنif لَمnot تَعُدreturn بِيَديto my hand مَنافِعُbenefits بِالَّذيthrough what
آتيI do فَهَلthen is there مِنany عائِدٍreturn بِيَدَيكُماto your two hands
If no benefits return to my hand through what
If the benefits do not return to me by what I do,
I do, is there any return to your two hands?
Is there one who can bring them back by your two hands?
بُردُthe cloak التَقِيِّthe pious man وَإِنand even if تَهَلَّلَhas become threadbare نَسجُهُits weave
خَيرٌbetter بِعِلمِin the knowledge of اللَهِGod مِنthan بُردَيكُماyour two cloaks
The pious man's cloak, though its weave is threadbare,
The cold of the pious, even if its weave is worn out,
is better, in God's knowledge, than your two cloaks.
Is better, by God's knowledge, than both your garments.
