for aged women, nor for maidens.

وَلَيسواand they are not بِالحُماةِprotectors وَلاnor الغَيارىjealous guardians
For in Mecca's pebbly plain is a people's elite,
and they are neither protectors nor jealous guardians.

And indeed Shayba's men, its custodians,
when the throngs set out for its Kaaba,

stand, driving the pilgrims in pairs
into the Sacred House, while they are drunk.

When they take the debased coins, they admit them,
even if they are Jews or Christians.

Whenever a good deed burdens you, perform it,
and say 'yes' if righteousness calls you.

If 'the misguided' were named, you would recognize my unveiling
of the gilded falsehood that lay concealed.
وَلاand do not تَثِقيtrust بِماin what صَنَعواthey made وَصاغواand they fashioned

فَقَدfor indeed جاءَتhave come خُيولُهُمُtheir horses تَبارىracing one another
And do not trust what they made and fashioned,
for their horses have come racing one another.

They ran for a time and will be still after a while,
and the Guardian's decrees cannot be outpaced.

Perhaps the conjunction of this star will turn
bewildered peoples toward the paths of guidance.
فَقَدfor indeed أَودىbrought ruin بِهِمupon them سَغَبٌhunger وَظِمءٌand thirst

وَأَينُقُهُمand their she-camels بِمَتلَفَةٍin a deadly wasteland حَسارىexhausted
For hunger and thirst have brought them to ruin,
and their she-camels are exhausted in a deadly wasteland.
وَماand not أَدريI know أَمَنwhether those who فَوقَare atop المَهارىthe Mahri camels

أَلَبُّwiser إِذاwhen نَظَرتُI look أَمِor المَهارىthe Mahri camels
And I do not know whether those atop the Mahri camels
are wiser, when I look, or the Mahri camels.

فَباتواso they became فيin ضَلالَتِهاits misguidance أُسارىcaptives
A ruling power came upon them that conquered and grew mighty,
so they became captives in its misguidance.
وَظَنّواand they thought الطُهرَpurity مُتَّصِلاًbound بِقَومٍto a people

And they thought purity bound to a people,
and I swear that they are not pure.

And the people's eyes have not all fallen asleep,
but in their darkness they feign sleep.

They have words that contradict what they conceal;
their breasts doubt its truth.
