وَماand not فيكُمُamong you وافٍfaithful لِمُقتٍin hatred وَلاnor حُبِّlove
Sons of Adam, what wretched company you are!
Not one among you is faithful in hatred or in love.
وَجَدتُكُمُand I found you لاnot تَقرَبونَyou draw near إِلىto العُلاnobility
كَماjust as أَنَّكُمُthat you لاnot تَبعُدونَyou keep far عَنِfrom السَبِّabuse
I have found you drawing no nearer to nobility,
just as you never keep far from abuse.
وَلمand did not تَكفِكُمsuffice you أَكبادُlivers شاءٍsheep وَجامِلٍand a camel herd
وَوَحشٍand wild beasts إِلىuntil أَنthat رُمتُمُyou sought كَبِدَthe liver الضَبِّthe spiny-tailed lizard
The livers of sheep and camels did not suffice you,
nor those of wild beasts, till you sought the spiny-tailed lizard's liver.
فَإِنbut if كانَis ماwhat بَينَamong البَهائِمِthe beasts قاضِياًfatal
فَهَذاthen this قَضاءٌa decree جاءَcame مِنfrom قِبَلِthe side of الرَبِّthe Lord
But if what passes among the beasts is fatal,
then this is a decree that came from the Lord.
رَكِبتُمُyou boarded سَفينَships البَحرِthe sea مِنfrom فِرطِan excess of رَغبَةٍdesire
فَماso what لِلمَطاياfor the riding camels وَالمُطَهَّمَةِand the finely formed steeds القُبِّlean-flanked
You boarded the ships of the sea out of excessive desire;
so what of riding camels and finely formed, lean-flanked steeds?
وَكُلُّكُمُand each of you يُبديshows لِدُنياهُtoward his worldly life نَغصَةًvexation
عَلىdespite أَنَّهُthat he يُخفيconceals بِهاover it كَمَدَanguish الصَبِّthe lovesick lover
And each of you shows vexation with his worldly life,
though he conceals a lovesick lover's anguish over it.

When people are engaged in truthful conversation, they become
enemies; for all close friends harbor deceit.
نُشاهِدُwe see بيضاًfair-complexioned ones مِنamong رِجالٍmen كَأَنَّهُمas though they were

We see fair-complexioned men, as though they were
jet-black birds descending upon grain.
إِذاwhen طَلَبواthey seek فَاِقنَعthen be content لِتَظفَرَso you may attain بِالغِنىwealth

When they seek, be content, that you may attain wealth;
and if they speak, be silent, that you may return with your wits.
وَإِنand if لَمnot تُطِقyou can bear هِجرانَforsaking رَهطِكَyour kin دائِماًforever

فَمِنthen among أَدَبِthe discipline النَفسِof the self الزِيارَةُvisiting عَنafter غِبِّan interval
And if you cannot bear to shun your kin forever,
then visiting at intervals is part of self-discipline.
وَيَدعواand calls الطَبيبَthe physician المَرءُthe man وافاهُhas come to him حَينُهُhis appointed hour

And a man calls the physician when his appointed hour has come:
Easy now! The matter is beyond medicine.
