Sins appear, so I counsel you

to forsake them, not merely commit them now and then.

As though the Guardian had enjoined souls

to love life passionately and cherish it.

When they bury one who has perished in the dust,

they put their pledges to their loved ones out of mind.

They persist in what brings them no benefit,

and that is because they have little understanding.

    Al-Khalil departed to his Lord,

and left prosody to its masters.

So he gives no thought to its pegs,

nor hopes for any benefit from its cords.
