Shorten the day with a cup—wise was he

who turned away from it and came forward, not stopping short.

That is the fire of error: whoever warms himself at it

burns from its warmth in the chilly season.

And this wine has a wind that raged

through the mind's dry stubble, amid wind and bitter cold.

Deemed base is the grape wine you drink,

while your drinking companions are an abstainer and a tongue-tied man.

Do you milk the night's black grapes for wine,

and press the Pleiades' white grapes?

Is wine bound up in its teats

by a milker who milks the obstinate sinner?

Live with honor pure by abandoning it,

and when you die, pass into mercy.

Our companion made the pilgrimage without piety,

like Buhtur's kinsman in the year of al-Muntasir.
