She traveled by night, with a supple figure that steals the mind,
She walked with a figure that steals hearts, so gentle,
Toward a night traveler, meeting the nose-rings—Mudlij’s sister.
To a tryst where she meets the hills, sister of another tryst,
وَقَدand already حارَwas bewildered هاديthe guide of الرَكبِthe caravan وَاللَيلُand the night ضارِبٌspreading

And the caravan’s guide was bewildered, while night spread
The guide of the caravan was lost, and night was falling
Its leaves, and dawn had not yet brightened.
With its leaves, and dawn had not yet glimmered,
تَكابَدُshe struggles through خَضراءَgreen-dark الحَنادِسِdeep darkness جَونَةًpitch-black

She braves a green-black night of deepest gloom,
Enduring the green locust trees, she was passionate,
Whose store from its full moon is half an armlet,
Her provision was half a pendant from her full moon.

Until dawn appeared, revealing its path
Until a dawn appeared, revealing its path,
To us with an eloquent tongue, free of stammering.
To us in eloquent speech, not stammering,
وَإِنand if خَلَجَتtwitches عَينٌan eye لِبَينٍat parting فَحَسبُهاthen enough for it
مِنَof البينِparting يَومٌa day مِنfrom رَداًdeath مُتَخَلَّجِsnatching away
And if an eye twitches at parting, enough for it
If an eye despairs for a loved one, it is enough
Is a day of parting brought by death that snatches away.
For it from separation a day of tossing and turning,
كَفىit suffices حَزناًas sorrow أَنَّthat الفَتىthe young man بَعدَafter سَومِهِhis roaming
تَقولُsay لَهُto him الأَيّامُthe days فيinto جَدَثٍa grave لِجenter!
It is sorrow enough that a young man, after his roaming,
Sorrow is enough that after his perfection
Is told by the days: ‘Enter a grave.’
The days say to him in a grave, “Cling!”
وَكَمand how often وَطِأَتhave trodden أَقدامُناour feet فيin تُرابِهاits dust
جَبينَthe brow of أَخيa man of كِبرٍpride وَهامَةَand the head of أَبلَجِa bright-faced man
And how often have our feet trodden, in the earth’s dust,
And how many times our feet trod on its soil,
A proud man’s brow and a bright-faced man’s head.
The forehead of my elder brother and the prominent nose of Abu Lahab.
