فيin صَحَّةٍhealth وَاِقتِدارٍand ability مِنهُon his part ماas long as عَمِراhe lives
Religion is a young man's forsaking pleasures while prosperous,
Religion is the youth abandoning pleasures easily
In health and with the power to enjoy them, for as long as he lives.
In health and capability as long as he lives
وَالحِلمُand forbearance صَبرُpatience أَخيa man of عِزٍّmight لِظالِمِهِtoward one who wrongs him
حَتّىuntil يَقولَsay أُناسٌsome people ذَلَّhe has been humbled أَوor قُمِراhe has been bested
And forbearance is a powerful man's patience toward one who wrongs him,
And wisdom is the patience of a dear proud brother with his oppressor
Until people say, "He has been humbled or bested."
Until people say he is humiliated or esteemed
وَالغُمرُand the novice يَأتيenters غِمارَthe depths اللُجِّthe sea يَحسِبُهاhe thinks them
ضَحضاحَa shallow stretch ماءٍof water فَنُلفيهِthen we find him وَقَدand already غُمِراhe has been submerged
And the novice enters the sea's depths, thinking them
And the flood comes as murky water of the depths, thinking it
Shallow water; then we find him already submerged.
A shallow water, so we wade into it and it is flooded
وَالظَبيُand the gazelle أَشجَعُbraver مِنthan لَيثٍa lion وَمِنand than نَمِرٍa leopard
إِذاwhen أَلَمَّit draws near يُضاهيit rivals اللَيثَthe lion وَالنَمِراand the leopard
And the gazelle is braver than a lion and than a leopard,
And the gazelle is braver than a lion or a panther
When it draws near to vie with the lion and the leopard.
When hurt it matches the lion and the panther
وَمِنand among عَناءِthe hardships of اللَياليthe nights خادِمٌa servant ضَغِنٌresentful
إِنif يُؤمَرِhe is commanded الأَمرَthe command يَفعَلhe does غَيرَother than ماwhat أُمِراhe was commanded
And among the hardships of the nights is a resentful servant:
And from the hardship of nights a serving boy, content
If given an order, he does something other than what he was commanded.
If ordered something does other than what he was ordered
