الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذي صاغَني

الحَمدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذي صاغَني

أَطعَمَني رِزقي وَأَحياني

أَطعَمَني رِزقي وَأَحياني

Praise be to God, who fashioned me,

Praise be to Allah who shaped me

fed me my sustenance and gave me life.

Fed me my sustenance and revived me

شَخصِيَ هَذا عُرضَةٌ لِلرَدى

شَخصِيَ هَذا عُرضَةٌ لِلرَدى

وَلَم يَزَل مَعدِنَ عِصيانِ

وَلَم يَزَل مَعدِنَ عِصيانِ

This body of mine is exposed to death,

My personality is prone to ruin

and has never ceased to be a mine of disobedience.

And has always been a mine of disobedience

مِن كُلِّ فَنٍّ فيهِ أُعجوبَةٌ

مِن كُلِّ فَنٍّ فيهِ أُعجوبَةٌ

كَأَنَّهُ جامِعُ سُفيانِ

كَأَنَّهُ جامِعُ سُفيانِ

It holds a marvel of every kind,

In every art there is a wonder in it

as though it were Sufyan's compendium.

As if it were a gathering of Sufyan

يا آلَ يَعقوبَ خُذوا حَذرَكُم

يا آلَ يَعقوبَ خُذوا حَذرَكُم

في الدَهرِ مِن حَبرٍ وَدَيّانِ

في الدَهرِ مِن حَبرٍ وَدَيّانِ

O house of Jacob, be on your guard

O descendants of Jacob take your precautions

throughout your days against rabbi and religious judge.

In the ages from an inkpot and judge

يَزعَمُ نارٌ مِن سَماءٍ هَوَت

يَزعَمُ نارٌ مِن سَماءٍ هَوَت

تَأكُلُ ذا إِفكٍ وَطُغيانِ

تَأكُلُ ذا إِفكٍ وَطُغيانِ

He claims a fire that fell from heaven

A fire claims it fell from a sky

devours one guilty of falsehood and tyranny.

That eats those of slander and tyranny

لَو كُنتَ فيما قُلتَهُ صادِقاً

لَو كُنتَ فيما قُلتَهُ صادِقاً

لَم تَعدُ لِلشَرِّ بِهَيمانِ

لَم تَعدُ لِلشَرِّ بِهَيمانِ

Had you been truthful in what you said,

If you were truthful in what you said

you would not have rushed madly toward evil,

You would not return to evil with delight

وَلَم تَكُن تَرغَبُ في زُيَّفٍ

وَلَم تَكُن تَرغَبُ في زُيَّفٍ

تُؤخَذُ مِن عُرجٍ وَعُميانِ

تُؤخَذُ مِن عُرجٍ وَعُميانِ

nor would you have coveted counterfeit coins

And you would not crave falsities

taken from the lame and the blind.

Taken from the lame and the blind

أَما تَوَقّى كَذِباً فاحِشاً

أَما تَوَقّى كَذِباً فاحِشاً

أَذهَلَني مِنكَ وَأَعياني

أَذهَلَني مِنكَ وَأَعياني

Will you not avoid an outrageous lie

Do you not fear a manifest lie

that, coming from you, has bewildered and exhausted me?

That has confused me and distracted me

تَجعَلُ نَمِيَّكَ تِبراً وَما

تَجعَلُ نَمِيَّكَ تِبراً وَما

تَخلُطُهُ حَبَّةَ عُقيانِ

تَخلُطُهُ حَبَّةَ عُقيانِ

You pass your base coin off as raw gold, yet

You make your sleep devotion but

you mix into it not a single grain of pure gold.

You do not mix in it a grain of devotion
