بِحَمدِwith praise of اللَهِGod لَمnot تُخلَقwere created كِعابٌbuxom maidens
تَجَنَّبُshun كُلَّevery مُخزِيَةٍdisgraceful deed وَعُنفِand violence
Praise be to God: no buxom maidens have been created
With praise to Allah, no wrong was created
Who shun every disgraceful deed and violence.
Avoiding all shame and violence
فَجَدعٌfor mutilation حَلَّbefell فيin أُذنَيthe two ears of غُلامٍa boy
أَبَرُّkinder لَدَيهِto him مِنthan قُرطٍan earring وَشَنفِand an upper-ear ornament
For mutilation that befalls a boy's two ears
Yet a deaf one dwelled in a boy's ears
Is kinder to him than an earring and an upper-ear ornament,
More precious to him than earrings and finery
وَلاand not سِيَماthe like (with lā: especially) إِذاif أُعطَيتَyou are given أَيداًstrength
لَمَدَّfor extending يَدَيكَyour two hands أَوor أَنَفاًpride بِأَنفِthrough a nose
Especially if you are granted strength
Especially if given hands
To stretch out your two hands, or pride through a nose.
That stretched out his hands or nose with a nose
أَرىI see الأَيّامَthe days تَجحَدُdeny ثُمَّthen تَثنيfollow up
بِإيجابٍwith affirmation وَتوجِبُand affirm ثُمَّthen تَنفيnegate
I see the days deny, then follow up
I see days deny, then relent
With affirmation; they affirm, then negate.
With obligation, obligate, then negate
وَإِنand even if لَمnot يَعقُلِhobbles الأَقدامَthe feet عَّيبٌa defect
حَمَلنَthey bear الثِقلَthe burden مِنfrom فَدَعٍtwisted ankles وَحَنفِand turned-in feet
And even if no defect hobbles the feet,
If feet do not comprehend, it is a flaw
They bear the burden of twisted ankles and turned-in feet.
That they carried the burden of abandon and deviation
وَقَدand sometimes يَحتالُone contrives فيin رَدِّwarding off الرَزاياcalamities
بِعودِwith a lute مُغَرِّدٍsinging وَبِعودِand with wood صِنفِṣinf (aromatic wood)
And sometimes one contrives to ward off calamities
And one may scheme in rejecting calamities
With a singing lute and with ṣinf incense wood.
With a warbling branch and branch of variety
وَكَمand how many غُرَّتwere beguiled مَعاطِسُnoses مِنof رِجالٍmen
بِريحِby the scent of أُلوَّةٍaloeswood أَوor ريحِthe scent of رَنفِranf (a fragrant plant)
And how many men's noses have been beguiled
And how many sniffles were fooled from men
By the scent of aloeswood or the scent of ranf.
By the wind of an instrument or wind of a fan
