People visit me: this one's land is Yemen,

among the countries, and that one's home is Tabas.

They said, "We heard a report about you." I told them,

"May God banish none but those who mislead."

    فَإِن صَدَقتُ عَرَتهُم رَوجُهٌ عُبُسُ

    They seek a structure—a construction I cannot master;

but if I speak truth, grim [faces] come upon them.

May God help us! Everyone, in making a living,

meets hardship; the bright stars above us are dusky.

What do you want? No wealth has become available to me

to be begged for, nor knowledge to be gleaned.

Do you ask an ignoramus to benefit you,

and milk [a she-camel] whose udder is dry?

Nothing pleases people but a deceiver's words,

as though people, whenever [traded], were rebuked.

They have spent their entire lives on estates,

and what they wore was like sacrificial camels' blankets.

I am wretched because I cannot offer you

any aid, while time's vicissitudes hold me captive.

Who can grant the Yemenis an evening when their fire

is blazing, and Suhayl is a firebrand among them?

And the Bedouin a tent pitched for him

in smiling meadows, with frowns and caked dung in them?

As though people's secrets, even when concealed,

were a longing lover's breaths, quenched when held in.

    فَقَد أَتوكَ بِنَجواهُم وَما نَبَسوا

    And their faces spoke of their hidden secrets;

for they brought you their confidences without uttering a word.

Our hours are like stealthy wolves: if they grow dusky

in the night, the wolf too is dusky gray in color.
