People follow the earth: when it is miserly,

they are miserly; and if it is once generous, they are generous.

People boast to one another of glory, though discerning minds declare

that in these generations there are no illustrious people.

And sovereignty belongs to God, and the world has its vicissitudes:

good and evil, destitution and relief.

And people are diverse, united by no common aim:

binding and unbinding, journeying to Tihama and to Najd.

O night, two opposites: some people, wakeful in the darkness,

keep vigil through you, while others within you are asleep.

Help your brother in a good deed he intends to undertake,

for believers are helpers in good deeds.
