ظُلمُ مُستَضعَفٍ وَأَخذُ مُكوسِ

ظُلمُ مُستَضعَفٍ وَأَخذُ مُكوسِ

وَحَياةٌ في عالَمٍ مَنكوسِ

وَحَياةٌ في عالَمٍ مَنكوسِ

Oppression of the powerless, and the levying of tolls,

Oppression of the weak, and seizing of property

and life in a world turned upside down.

And a life in a twisted world

جَلَّ رَبُّ الأَنامِ زَيدٌ كَعَمروٍ

جَلَّ رَبُّ الأَنامِ زَيدٌ كَعَمروٍ

وَأَخو البِرِّ لَيسَ بِالمَوكوسِ

وَأَخو البِرِّ لَيسَ بِالمَوكوسِ

Exalted is the Lord of creation; Zayd is like Amr,

Exalted is the Lord of mankind, Zaid is like Amr

and the man of virtue is not shortchanged.

And the brother of righteousness is not broken

وَكَذا الجَمرُ مِثلُهُ الرَجمُ قَد مِيَ

وَكَذا الجَمرُ مِثلُهُ الرَجمُ قَد مِيَ

زَ بِلَفظٍ مُغَيَّرٍ مَعكوسِ

زَ بِلَفظٍ مُغَيَّرٍ مَعكوسِ

And likewise, stoning is like embers, but has been distin-

And so the ember, just like stoning, has passed away

guished by an altered, reversed word.

With an altered and reversed utterance
