    Oil suffices you as a relish; for it was shed no

    Blood, nor did pain touch a soul as it flowed.

    It has virtues, among them that it entails no burden,

    And that by its radiance the darkness is dispelled.

    They said: a slain man was cut up in rage.

    So I said: wounding the dead and words are alike.

    أَو قَطَّعوهُ فَما يَنتابُهُ أَلَمُ

    If they bid him farewell, he does not know what they have done;

    Or if they cut him up, no pain assails him.

    And many a fair-faced man has his head cast away unavenged,

    Just as a pen is trimmed for the slightest reason.
