ياO روحُsoul شَخصيmy body مَنزِلٌa dwelling أُوfirst fragment of 'you inhabited it' طَنتَهُremaining fragment of 'you inhabited it'
وَرَحَلتِand you departed عَنهُfrom it فَهَلso, did...? أَسِفتِyou grieved وَقَدand already هُدِمit was demolished
O soul, my body is a dwelling you inhabited.
O my soul, the abode you built and departed from
And you left it; did you grieve when it was demolished?
Have you grieved since it was demolished?
عيدَwas visited المَريضُthe sick man وَعاوَنَتهُand helped him خَوادِمٌmaidservants
ثُمَّthen اِنتَقَلتِyou departed فَماso ... not أُعينَhe was helped وَلاnor خُدِمhe was served
The sick man was visited, and maidservants helped him.
The sick man has recovered and servants attended him
Then you departed, and he was neither helped nor served.
Then you departed, with no eyes wet or hands busy.
لَقَدِindeed اِستَراحَfound rest مُعَلَّلٌa patient being tended وَمُساهِرٌand one keeping vigil
مِنهُfrom it وَإِنand although غَدَتِbegan النَوائِحُthe mourning women تَلتَدِمbeat themselves in mourning
The patient and his night attendant have indeed found rest
The ailing and wakeful found rest
From it, though the mourning women began beating themselves.
Though dirges still weep for them.
حَمَلوهُthey carried him بَعدَafter مَجادِلٍcastles وَأَسِرَّةٍand beds
حَملَthe carrying of الغَريبِthe stranger فَحُطَّso he was laid down فيin بَيتٍa house رُدِمwas filled with earth
After castles and beds, they carried him
After disputes and sorrows they carried him
As a stranger is carried; he was laid in a house filled with earth.
And laid the stranger in a ruined house.
ماnot زالَceased فيin تَعَبٍweariness وَهَمٍand worry دائِمٍunceasing
فَلَعَلَّهُso perhaps he عَدِمَlacked الأَذاةَsuffering بِأَنby the fact that عُدِمhe was no more
He was always in weariness and unceasing worry.
Still in constant toil and worry
So perhaps he escaped suffering by being no more.
Perhaps he ended suffering by ending.
لَوif كانَwere يَنطِقُspeaks مَيِّتٌa dead man لَسَأَلتُهُI would ask him
ماذاwhat أَحَسَّhe felt وَماand what رَأىhe saw لَماwhen قَدِمhe arrived
If a dead man could speak, I would ask him
If the dead could speak I’d ask him
What he felt and what he saw when he arrived.
What he felt and saw when he arrived.
إِنif تَثوِyou dwell فيin دارِthe abode of الجِنانِthe gardens of Paradise فَإِنَّماthen merely
فارَقتَyou left مِنfrom دُنياكَyour earthly world ناراًa fire تَحتَدِمrages fiercely
If you dwell in the abode of Paradise, you have merely
If you prosper in the gardens of paradise
Left your earthly world's fiercely raging fire.
You left a world aflame behind you.
مَنwho ذاthat one يَلومُكَblames you فيfor هَواكَyour love مَسيئَةًone who does harm (feminine)

Who can blame you for loving one who wrongs you?
Who would blame you for your transgressions in passion?
All humankind are infatuated with her, and grief-stricken.
All people are burdened with a similar yoke.
فَاِعذِرso pardon خَليلَكَyour close friend إِنif جَفاكَhe shuns you وَلاand do not تَجِدbe angry

So pardon your friend if he shuns you, and do not be angry.
Forgive your friend if he shunned you
And if a visit becomes possible for you, do not prolong it.
And do not linger when visiting him.
بِئسَwretched is العَشيرُthe companion أَناI الغَداةَthis morning
وَصَاحِبيand my companion مِثليlike me فَإِنّيfor I ماnot نَدِمتُI felt regret وَلاnor نَدِمhe felt regret
What a wretched companion I am this morning!
Evil kin am I in the mornings
And my companion is like me, for I have felt no regret, nor has he.
And my friend likewise, but I regret not nor does he.
