O people lying lifeless in the dust,

May God pardon what you kept hidden.

Oh, if only you had not lain with your slave women,

Nor drawn near to your free women.

If you have found rest from what we endure,

Then we, after you, still suffer for your offenses.

Suitors have already sought your women in marriage,

And the sound from your co-wives has been stilled.

Decay has scattered its ashes over you,

And you have not returned to your fragrant powders.

Had my Lord willed, He would, in His might, have twisted tight

The cords of yours that death unraveled.
