    فَأَفكِرِ الآنَ أَقصى الفِكرِ وَاِرتَجِلِ

    O my mind, do not turn toward an evil deed;

    so think now to the furthest reach of thought, and improvise.

    وَيا لِساني بِغَيرِ الصِدقِ لا تَجُل

    And O my fingers, do not be outstretched for a favor;

    and O my tongue, do not roam beyond the truth.

    My soul's fears in this first life are redoubled,

    and I remain in dread of the next life.

    فَقِس عَلى خَزَرٍ في العَينِ أَو نَجَلِ

    And evil is innate in creation and never leaves it;

    so liken it to an eye's narrowness or breadth.

    Had a man been rightly guided, he would not reach eagerly toward a woman,

    nor would an innocent maiden be led as bride to a man.

    Or were an old man granted the lifespan of the Eagle among the stars—

    not among those with wings—he would not say, 'Enough.'

    The living may grow weary, yet inward thoughts are not sincere

    in their love of death, among the straight-haired and the wavy-haired.

    Most deserving among creatures of being granted a good end

    is one who has not come away from a vile deed visibly ashamed.

    And silence is wiser; noble words have

    merit, yet speech also contains the counterpart of wanton women.

    Indeed, the two subtle entities—time and space—

    remain forever without a sound or clamor.

    If my removal from this world is to lead to

    something better and more spacious, then take me away swiftly.

    And if you know my final destination in the hereafter

    to be worse and narrower, then, my Lord, prolong my allotted span.
