ياO خاطِريmy mind لاdo not تَوَجَّهturn وَجهَtoward سَيِّئَةٍan evil deed
فَأَفكِرِso think الآنَnow أَقصىthe utmost الفِكرِof thought وَاِرتَجِلِand improvise
O my mind, do not turn toward an evil deed.
So think now to thought's furthest reach, and improvise.
وَياand O بَنانِيَmy fingers لاdo not تُبسَطbe stretched out لِعارِفَةٍfor a favor
وَياand O لِسانيmy tongue بِغَيرِwith anything but الصِدقِthe truth لاdo not تَجُلroam
And O my fingers, do not stretch out for a favor.
And O my tongue, do not roam beyond the truth.
أَوجالُthe fears نَفسِيَof my soul فيin الأولىthis first life مَضاعَفَةٌare redoubled
وَلاand not أَزالُI cease مِنَof الأُخرىthe next life عَلىin وَجَلِfear
My soul's fears in this first life are redoubled,
and I remain in dread of the next.
وَالشَرُّand evil فيin الخَلقِhumankind طَبعٌan innate trait لاnot يُزايِلُهُleaves it
فَقِسso compare عَلىwith خَزَرٍnarrowness فيin العَينِthe eye أَوor نَجَلِbreadth
And evil is innate in humankind, never leaving it;
so liken it to an eye's narrowness or breadth.
لَوif وُفِّقَwere rightly guided المَرءُa man لَمwould not يَبهَشreach eagerly إِلىtoward اِمرَأَةٍa woman

Were a man rightly guided, he would not reach eagerly toward a woman,
nor would a guileless maiden be led in marriage to a man.
أَوor عُمِّرَwere granted long life الشَيخُan old man عُمرَthe lifespan النَسرِof the Eagle مِنamong شُهُبٍstars
لاnot مِنamong ذَواتِcreatures possessing جَناحٍa wing لَمwould not يَقُلsay بَجَلِEnough!
Or were an old man granted the lifespan of the Eagle among the stars—
not one of the winged creatures—he would not say, "Enough!"
قَدmay يَسأَمُgrow weary الحَيُّthe living وَالأَسرارُand inner thoughts ماnot خَلُصَتhave been sincere

The living may grow weary, yet their hearts are not sincere
in their love of death, among the straight-haired and the wavy-haired alike.
أَولىmost deserving البَرِيَّةِamong creatures أَنto يَحظىattain بِعاقِبَةٍa good end
مَنone who لَمhas not يَرُحcome away مِنfrom قَبيحٍa vile deed بادِيَshowing الخَجَلِshame
Of all creatures, the one most worthy of a good end
is he who has not come away from a vile deed visibly ashamed.
وَالصَمتُand silence أَحجىwiser وَأَحرارُand noble forms الكَلامِof speech لَهاto them
فَضلٌmerit وَفيهِand in it نَظيرُthe counterpart النُسوَةِof women الهُجُلِwho are wanton
And silence is wiser; noble words have
merit, yet speech also has the like of wanton women.
إِنَّindeed اللَطيفَينِthe two subtle things مِنnamely دَهرٍtime وَأَمكِنَةٍand places
لاnot يَفتَآنِthey both cease بِلاwithout حِسٍّa sound وَلاnor زَجَلِclamor
Indeed, the two impalpable things—time and space—
go on without a sound or clamor.

If my departure from this world leads to
a better, more spacious place, then take me swiftly.
وَإِنand if عَلِمتَYou know مَآليmy destination عِندَat آخِرَتيmy hereafter

And if You know my destination in the hereafter to be
worse and narrower, then, my Lord, delay my appointed hour.
