ياO رَبِّmy Lord عيشَةُthe life ذيof one possessed of الضَلالِerror خَسارُloss
أَطلِقrelease أَسيرَكَYour captive فَالحَياةُfor life إِسارُbondage
O my Lord, the life of one astray is loss.
O Lord, the life of the misguided is loss
Release Your captive, for life is bondage.
Release your prisoner, for life is captivity
وَكَأَنَّand as though عُمرَthe lifetime المَرءِof a person شُقَّةُa long journey ظاعِنٍof a traveler
تُسرىis traversed by night بِأَنفاسٍwith breaths لَهُof his وَتُسارُand is traversed by day
And a person's lifetime is like a traveler's long journey,
As if the life of a person is the sail of a ship
traversed with his breaths, by night and by day.
That sails on breaths, easy and difficult
وَكَأَنَّماand as though الدُنِّياthe world كَعابٌa maiden with budding breasts أَيُّناwhichever of us

And the world is like a maiden with budding breasts; whichever of us
As if the world is but waves, whoever
hopes for union with her—that man is Yasār.
Hopes in it, that is an easy sail
سَتَعودُwill return أَشباهٌlikenesses لِعادٍof ʿĀd مَرَّةًonce more
وَتَهُبُّand will awaken مِنfrom رَقداتِهاtheir slumbers الأَيسارُthe Yasārs (men like Yasār)
Those resembling ʿĀd will return once more,
Similar times to the past will return
and the Yasārs will awaken from their slumbers.
And good fortunes will wake from their slumber
وَإِذاand when الفَتىthe young man لَحَظَregarded الزَمانَtime بِعَينِهِwith his own eye
هانَbecame easy الشَقاءُmisery عَلَيهِfor him وَالإِعسارُand poverty
And when a young man regards time with his own eye,
And when a young man sees time with his eyes
misery and poverty become easy for him to bear.
Hardship becomes easy, and poverty disappears
