ياO رَبِّmy Lord لاnot أَدعواI call to لَميسَLamis كَماas دَعاhe called
أَوسٌAws وَلاnor دَعوىthe call of زُهَيرٍZuhayr حارِHār (short for Hārith)
O my Lord, I do not call to Lamis as did
O Lord, I do not invoke Mayas as Aus invoked her,
Aws, nor utter Zuhayr's cry of 'Hār!'
Nor Zuhair's invocation at dawn;
وَالنَفسُand the soul لاجِأَةٌtaking refuge إِلىto جَسَدٍa body لَهاbelonging to it
خُلِقَتit was created مُحاذِرَةًwary مِنَof الإِصحارِventuring into the open desert
And the soul takes refuge in a body of its own;
The soul seeks refuge in a body created for it,
It was created wary of venturing into the open desert.
Fearing the desert's annihilation;
وَغَدَتand set out in the morning مَحاراتُthe camel litters الحَجيجِof the pilgrims إِلىto مِناًMina
وَكَأَنَّماand as though يَنظِمنَthey string دُرَّpearls مَحارِof oyster shells
And the pilgrims' litters set out in the morning toward Mina,
The pilgrims' zeal at Mina is like
As though they were stringing pearls from oyster shells.
Their threading of precious pearls;
يَخبِطنَthey trudge فيin قَيظٍsummer heat سَرابَthe mirage of هَواجِرٍscorching noontides
وَيُخَلنَand they are taken for فيهِin it الرَوضَthe meadows بِالأَسحارِin the hours before dawn
They trudge, in summer's heat, through the mirage of scorching noons,
They grope in scorching haze for a mirage of maidens,
And in it they seem like meadows before dawn.
And leave at dawn the garden's greenery.
