ياO قَلبِmy heart لاnot أَدعوكَI call you فيto أَكرومَةٍa noble deed
إِلّاexcept that تَقاعَسُyou hang back دونَهاshort of it وَتَباطاand you dawdle
O my heart, I never call you to a noble deed
but you hang back from it and dawdle.
وَالمَوتُand death حاسٍa drinker ماnot تَعَيَّفَhas disdained آجِناًstagnant water
وَتَضَيَّفَand has sought hospitality from الأَعرابَthe Bedouins وَالأَنباطاand the Nabataeans
And death is a drinker who has never shunned stagnant water,
and has been the guest of the Bedouins and the Nabataeans.
وَلَقَدand indeed حَفَرتُI have dug عَنِin search of اليَقينِcertainty بِخاطرٍwith a mind

And indeed, I have dug for certainty with a mind
whose digging could scarcely bring forth water.

And it shall surely overtake our curly-haired and our straight-haired.
And what has made you aware of al-Nuʿmān at Sābāṭ?

Will this death release me as a kindness?
For life has bound me and tightened the tether.
