O kings of the lands, you have gained a prolonging of

life, while tyranny toward women is your way.

Why do you not see the paths to noble heights?

Even a minister to women may visit the battlefield.

The people hope that an imam will arise,

    speaking amid the mute battalion.

The expectation proved false: there is no imam but

    reason, counseling morning and evening.

Then, if you obey it, it brings

mercy when journeying and when anchoring.

    These doctrines are merely means

for drawing worldly wealth to the leaders.

The people's aim is pleasure; they feel no pity

for the tears of al-Shayma and al-Khansa.

Like the one who rose to rally the Zanj in Basra,

    and like al-Qarmati in al-Ahsa.

So keep apart as much as you can, for a speaker

of truth becomes a burden to his companions.
