    فَكَيفَ تُعجِزُ أَقواماً مَساكينا

    O food, you are neither ruby nor gold;

how, then, are you beyond the reach of poor folk?

And I think that, if people paid their alms,

I would not see poverty's children complaining.

For if you live, you will see the weeping have laughed,

and those laughing out of utter ignorance in tears.

So shun those people if they declare their souls pure,

for the dwellers of our world are not pure.

They give you undiluted error to drink if you obey them,

though you have known them to be tellers of lies.

Let him never abandon the little good he does,

who has gained support and power on earth.

For natural talent breaks a verse or sets it right

with the slightest effort, adding vowels and leaving letters vowelless.
