وَلاand may not يُقِمraise up يَومُa day رَدىًof death ثاكِلَكone bereaved of you
O eater of apples, may you never perish,
Nor may a day of death raise up one bereaved of you.

The Nusayri said it, not I;
So listen, and embolden your fainthearted one in battle:
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were فيin دَهرِكَyour time تُفّاحَةًan apple
وَكانَand was تُفّاحُكَyour apple ذاthis one آكِلَكyour eater
You were once an apple in your time,
And your apple was this one who ate you.

In times past, you appeared as a letter of the alphabet,
And often, as you mark it with vowels, it has resembled you.
