Never lie; but if you do, do not utter

A lie about the Lord of heaven for gain.

For God was One and mighty before

A form was ascribed to Adam, or imagined.

And if you declare your lineage, saying, “I am one

Of His creatures,” that is lineage enough.

Human figures stain their keen swords with blood

Amid the dust, and spur the lean steeds.

And they grapple with the deep recesses of darkness,

And press on, thus crossing the broad desert plain.

    شَرِبوا لَهُ مَقراً لِكَيما يَلسِبا

    Their goal is sweet, its worth paltry;

For it they drank bitter aloes, so as to savor it.

And I know well—claiming descent from Mudar cannot help me—

That I shall follow the path of Saba’s two sons.

He bought wine and thereby prolonged his delight,

As is supposed, and had no scruple when he took captives.

When a soul departs from the body that

It inhabited, that body’s fate is to sink.
