لِنَفسِيَfor my soul إِنif تَنأَit departs عَنِfrom الجِسمِthe body رَوعَةٌdread
كَرَوعَةِlike the dread of أُنثىa woman أُجلِيَتwas driven out عَنfrom دِيارِهاher dwellings
My soul, should it draw away from the body, knows a terror
My soul, if it leaves the body, feels dread,
like that of a woman driven from her homeland.
Like a woman’s dread when driven from her home.
فَإِنfor if رَحَلَتit departs بِالرَغمِunder compulsion عَنfrom مُستَقَرِّهاits dwelling
فَماthen ... not كانَwas سُكناهاits residing لَهُin it بِاِختِيارِهاby its own choice
And if, against its will, it leaves its resting place,
For if it leaves its dwelling against its will,
its dwelling there was never of its own choosing.
It did not dwell there by its own choice.

لِأَقدامِكُمfor your feet فيin الأَرضِthe earth قَبلَbefore اِنهِيارَهاits collapse
So win salvation through devotion in life, and plant
So win salvation through piety in life, and steady
your feet firmly on the earth before it collapses.
Your feet on the earth before it crumbles.
وَإِنand if تُعظِمواyou exalt فيin دينِكُمyour faith جُمُعاتِكُمyour Fridays
فَإِنَّthen indeed رِجالاًmen أُولِعَتhave become passionately devoted بِشِيارِهاto their Saturdays
Though in your faith you exalt your Friday observances,
And though you exalt your Fridays in your faith,
I know men whose souls are enamored of petty things.
Some men are passionately devoted to their Saturdays.
