My hand knows no weight; rather, my ear has become

    A weigher—and some speech has a scale.

And the earth is a players' board, divided up:

Some of it plains, some mountains, some rugged ground.

People and the world in its entirety have changed,

Even the prey, once camels, are now hares.

And no secret is kept hidden from anyone,

Yet the keepers of wealth have multiplied.

If their pawns have not been turned into viziers,

Then the sheep is an elephant, and that elephant a vizier.

And there is no singer, only one expressing sorrow to him,

As the sons of Sarrāk say: a ḥuzzān—a cantor.
