عُيوبيmy faults إِنif سَأَلتَyou ask بِهاabout them كَثيرٌmany
وَأَيُّand which الناسِpeople لَيسَis not لَهُfor him عُيوبُfaults
My faults, if you ask about them, are many.
If you ask about my faults, many will tell of them,
And who among people has no faults?
For what person is there who has no faults?
وَلِلإِنسانِand for a person ظاهِرُthe outward aspect ماwhat يَراهُhe sees it
وَلَيسَand is not عَلَيهِincumbent on him ماwhat تُخفيconceals الغُيوبُthe unseen
And a person has the outward aspect of what he sees,
A person sees only the outer self;
And is not answerable for what the unseen conceals.
Hidden by the mysteries are the inner faults.
يَجُرّونَthey drag الذُيولَthe hems عَلىover المَخازيshameful deeds
وَقَدand already مُلِئَتhave been filled مِنَwith الغِشِّdeceit الجُيوبُthe bosoms of garments
They drag their hems over shameful deeds,
They drag their trains upon the carpets,
And their bosoms have been filled with deceit.
While their pockets are filled with deceit.
وَكَيفَand how يَصولُcharges فيin الأَيّامِthe days لَيثٌa lion
إِذاwhen وَهَتِhave grown weak المَخالِبُthe claws وَالنُيوبُand the fangs
And how can a lion charge as the days go by,
How can a lion rage in the days
When its claws and fangs have grown weak?
When his claws and fangs are blunted?
