أَلاlo إِنَّماonly الدُنياthe world نُحوسٌill fortunes لِأَهلِهاfor its people
فَماso there is no فيin زَمانٍan age أَنتَyou فيهِin it سُعودُgood fortune
Lo, the world is nothing but ill fortune for its people;
so there is no good fortune in an age in which you live.

A young man makes his will at death, as though
he were passing by to fulfill a need and return.

Nor has a departing soul despaired of a return;
it passed on, with promises in fate's keeping.
تَسيرُtravel بِناwith us الأَيّامُthe days وَهِيَwhile they حَثيثَةٌhastening
وَنَحنُwhile we قِيامٌstanding فَوقَهاupon them وَقُعودُand sitting
The days bear us along, hastening,
while we stand and sit upon them.
فَماso not خَشِيَتthey feared فيin السَيرِthe journey زَلَّةَthe slip of عاثِرٍone who stumbles

So they have feared no stumbler's slip along the way,
but descent and ascent are alike.
