لاlet not يُغبَطَنَّbe envied أَخوone endowed with نُعمىgood fortune بِنِعمَتِهِfor his good fortune
بِئسَwretched is الحَياةُlife حَياةٌa life بَعدَهاafter which الشَجَبُwoe
Let no fortunate man be envied for his good fortune.
Wretched is a life followed by woe.
وَالحِسُّand sensation أَوقَعَhas plunged حَيّاًa living being فيinto مَساءَتِهِhis misery
وَلِلزَمانِand Time has جُيوشٌarmies ماnot لَهاthey have لَجَبُclamor
And sensation has plunged the living into their misery.
And Time has armies that make no clamor.
لَوif تَعلَمُknew الأَرضَthe earth ماwhat أَفعالُthe deeds of ساكِنِهاits inhabitant

If the earth knew what its inhabitant does,
its wonder at what he brings about would long endure.
بَدءُthe beginning of السَعادَةِhappiness أَنthat لَمnot تُخلَقِyou were created اِمرَأَةٌa woman
فَهَلthen does تَوَدُّshe wishes جُمادىJumada أَنَّهاthat she رَجَبُRajab
The beginning of happiness is not to have been created a woman;
does Jumada, then, wish that she were Rajab?
وَلَمand not تَتُبyou repented لِاِختِيارٍby a choice كانَthat was مُنتَجَباًchosen
لَكِنَّكَbut you العودُthe stick إِذwhen يُلحىis debarked وَيُنتَجَبُand is stripped of bark
Nor did you repent through a freely chosen resolve;
but you are the stick when it is scraped and stripped of bark.
وَماand not اِحتَجَبتَyou secluded yourself عَنِfrom الأَقوامِpeople مِنout of نُسُكٍpiety

And you did not withdraw from people out of piety;
rather, you hide away only because of calamity.

فَقُلتُso I said صَبراًpatience وَتَسليماًand submission كَذاthus يَجِبُit must be
My soul said to me, 'I am in pain, with grit in my eye.'
So I said, 'Patience and submission—so it must be.'
